Frequently Asked Questions

Our Frequently Asked Questions section is designed to provide clear answers to common queries about our services & appointments.

What is Mate Talk and how is it different from therapy?

Mate Talk is a paid conversation and human connection service. It's not therapy, counselling, or any form of clinical mental health treatment. Think of it as having a genuine, judgment-free conversation with a real Australian bloke who listens without an agenda. No diagnoses, no clinical frameworks, no awkward silences. Just someone genuinely in your corner.

Is this a mental health service?

No. Mate Talk is a social support and companionship service. We are not psychologists, counsellors, or mental health professionals. If you need clinical mental health support, we can refer you to one of our Preferred Psychology Partners.

If it's not therapy, what am I actually paying for?

You're paying for genuine, judgment free conversation with someone fully present for you, the same thing you'd pay a personal trainer or life coach. None of those roles require a clinical qualification either, because the value isn't a credential, it's the quality of the conversation and the consistency of showing up. We deliberately don't have psychologists or counsellors on Mate Talk and don't provide diagnoses or clinical advice, we're not trying to replace professional help, we're filling the gap before, alongside, or after it. A portion of revenue from sessions also goes toward future free community events and outreach, so every booking helps build a wider support network, not just the person booking it.

Do I need to have a serious problem to use Mate Talk?

Not at all. Most of our clients aren't in crisis, they're just carrying a lot and need somewhere to put it. Work stress, relationship pressure, feeling lost, navigating big life changes, or just needing to talk something through. You don't need a reason beyond wanting to be heard.

What can I talk about in a session?

Anything that's on your mind. Work, relationships, family, finances, stress, identity, goals, fears, or nothing specific at all. There's no agenda and no right or wrong thing to bring to a session.

Is there anything that's off limits?

We are not trained crisis counsellors or mental health clinicians. If a conversation moves into territory that requires professional clinical support, we will refer you to the right people. We also ask that all conversations remain respectful.

Is what I say kept confidential?

Yes. Everything discussed in a Mate Talk session is kept strictly confidential. We will never share your information with third parties without your consent, except in rare circumstances where there is a serious risk to your safety or the safety of others.

Will anyone know I've used the service?

No. Your privacy is our priority. There is no public record of your sessions and we will never contact you in a way that would reveal your use of the service to others.

Is this safe to use?

Yes. Mate Talk is designed to be a safe, supportive, and judgment-free space. If at any point a session raises safety concerns, our Mates are trained to respond appropriately and connect you with the right support.

How long is a session?

Sessions are 30 minutes to 1 hour. If you feel like you need more time, you can book back-to-back sessions or schedule a follow-up.

What happens in a first session?

Your Mate will introduce themselves and give you the space to share whatever is on your mind. There's no structured process or intake questionnaire. You set the pace and the direction. Most people find the first session easier than they expected.

How much does it cost?

A single 30 minute session is $45 & a 1 hour session is $80. Corporate wellness packages are available for businesses, contact us for a quote.

Do you offer any free sessions?

We offer a free 15-minute introductory call so you can meet and make sure it feels right before committing to a full session.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

Yes. You can cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours before your session at no charge. Cancellations within 24 hours may incur a fee.

What if I'm in crisis or need urgent help?

Mate Talk is not a crisis service. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency or having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, please reach out to one of the following services immediately:

Lifeline — 13 11 14 (24 hours, 7 days) Beyond Blue — 1300 22 4636 (24 hours, 7 days) Emergency Services — 000

Can I contact the Mate i speak to outside of sessions?

Mate Talk sessions are a professional service. Your Mate is completely in your corner during sessions but maintains professional boundaries outside of them. This actually protects the quality of your experience — your Mate can support you most effectively when the relationship stays within the session. For ongoing community and connection our events are designed exactly for that.

Where does a portion of my session fee go?

A small portion of every paid session is set aside each month for free community events and charitable causes supporting Australian men. At the end of each month our Instagram community votes on which organisation receives that month's donation. We post the receipt publicly so you can see exactly where it goes.
